While participating in a Remembrance Day ceremony this afternoon – November 11 – one line from the First World War poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ hit me. It is meant to be a message to the living from soldiers who have died in battle: “Take up our quarrel with the foe.” I thought to myself, they (frightened parts of their personalities) might have said such a thing while they were alive, but such a message would not come from the grave (from their souls). Later, when I was talking about this with my husband I felt impatient towards him and spoke from that energy. Like a flash, I suddenly saw that my indulging this very familiar fp of my personality was nothing less than ‘an act of war’ on my part, directed at him. I chose to challenge it by immediately sharing this insight with him, even though another fp did not want to do so.

Thank you for sharing, Rosalind. This is a beautiful and powerful example of awareness and responsible choice. I am interested that you didn’t share the outcome of practicing authentic power. Did your choice bring you closer to your husband?

Yes it did, Catherine – I felt the distance melt away inside me. I notice myself wanting to add that the experience was not perfect, however, because I could also still feel the pain of the fp that so badly did not want to ‘admit’ what had happened — This helps me see another familiar fp that thinks I haven’t done it right (haven’t created authentic power) unless all pain disappears. Thank you for that support.

With love, Rosalind
