Gary and Linda often talk about how spiritual partners use power struggles to grow spiritually. I felt that I did that today. I was having dinner with my wife/spiritual partner today and something I said triggered a frightened part of her personality. Her reaction then in turn triggered a frightened part of my personality and I could feel myself wanting to engage in a power struggle. I had a familiar experience of feeling criticized and controlled and in a deeper way rejected. I wanted to indulge frightened parts of my personality that wanted to shut her down, disconnect and entertain other familiar thoughts that think, okay, I don’t deserve this, I have had enough of this, etc. But instead of criticizing her and continuing a power struggle, I asked her how she was feeling and she asked me the same. I chose to look deeply at what was going on in me and was able to see more clearly the struggle in her. I knew in that moment that I was going to accept her and not emotionally abandon her as she goes through her process. I also knew in that same moment that the automatic behavior of a frightened part of my personality that tends to write people off was greatly diminished today. Today there was a major healing of the frightened part of my personality that has felt rejected and abandoned. I knew in that moment that the Universe does not abandon me, even when I am reacting in fear. If these triggers hadn’t occurred today or had I chosen to engage in a power struggle, I would not have had the amazing insight that I had today.
